Bye Bye Dick and George

Don’t let the door slap you on the way out.

Already I have heard a bunch of whining about “rubbing it in”.  Ok, ok, we’re all in this together and we have to look forward.  Maybe we shouldn’t make fun of GW for being just plain ridiculous and Dick for being pro-torture and a bad shot…tomorrow.

We should look forward.  And by looking forward, we should heal the wounds of the past by restoring the constitution, repealing torture and holding accountable all those who have broken the law.  That would mean both sides of the isle.

The law is the law is the law is the law.

Let’s move forward by building new bridges and repairing the old ones.  Tomorrow.

But for today – woo-hoo!

Powell Sides with Obama

Colon Powell, the man who stood in front of the world with a vial of salt and scared us all into going to war with Iraq has now broken with the Republican party and endorsed Barack Obama.

Powell now says that his security council testimony is a “blot” on his record. He had originally cautioned against the overthrow of Saddam but eventually caved and played the role of a good soldier. When he starting understanding and expressing discontent with the fact that he was duped by intelligence based on some graduate student’s paper, Andrew Card asked him to resign and Condoleeza Rice took over. Cheney and Rumsfeld had their way and the good soldier was indeed carrying a big fat botch on his back.

So now he endorses Obama. Is this big news? Yes and no. The Bush and Cheney faithful will be dismissive and treat him like Chris Buckley. But for everyone else, it’s a bit of a signal. And it will likely take a news cycle or two. Hopefully it will affect some of the retired soldiers in Florida.

Maybe Obama will offer him his old job back. I would love to hear that. “Hey General, how about serving on my cabinet…I promise you will be heard this time.”

Chinese Official Executed for Corruption

62-year-old Zheng Xiao, the former head of China’s equivalent to the FDA, was executed on Tuesday for accepting bribes and approving at least six fake medicines, one of which was linked to 10 deaths.

Does this have anything to do with the poisonous dog food and tainted toothpaste they sold to U.S. manufacturers? Is that problem solved? Nope, it’s worse than imagined. And someone who might have had the chance to reveal the level of corruption even further is dead.

San Fermin Rocks the Streets of Pamplona

Ah, yes, getting drunk and trying to outrun a heard of bulls…sounds like fun! Two people were “gored” and 8 others injured as the world famous daredevil festival finished the second day of festivities yesterday. “Running of the bulls” might not be the best translation. “Running from the bulls” might be more appropriate.

Pamplona is a wonderful place to visit and is one of the most charming places I have ever seen. The streets are cobblestone, the people are friendly and spirited, and the weather is beautiful. Several veterans of the event have all but begged me to attend the running, but I have always passed on the invite. There’s something about crowds of drunks mixed with large bovine that doesn’t fit well with my life plans.
